History Of USPS:

Postal workers in New York City were resentful about low wages and poor working conditions back then. Therefore, they were encouraged by the Civil Rights Movement to conduct a strike against the U.S. government on 18th March, 1970. The strike at first included postal workers only from New York City, yet in the long run picked up support of more than 210,000 workers of the U.S. Post Office Department all over the nation.

While the strike finished without any response from the government, it did eventually take into account postal workers associations and the legislature to arrange an agreement which gave the associations the majority of what they needed along with the signing of the Postal Reorganization Act by the President of that time on August 12, 1970. The Act supplanted the bureau level Post Office Department with another government office named as the United States Postal Service and was put in to operations on July 1, 1971.

Current Operations Of The USPS

The USPS has a total of around 600,000 workers which makes it the third largest civil employer in the U.S. It also operates one of the largest vehicles business in the world with an approximation of two million vehicles. Apart from these, geographically and by volume, it is the world’s biggest postal framework, conveying 47% of the world’s mail. For each penny increment in the national average cost of gas, the USPS spends an extra $8 million every year to provide fuel to its fleet.
