About Food City
Food City can trace its beginnings to 1955 when founder Jack Smith opened his first store in Grundy, Virginia. In the years following, the Smiths opened several more stores and adopted the Food City name in 1984.
Currently, there are approximately 130 locations in five different states. Food City headquarters were originally located in Grundy, Virginia, but moved to Abingdon, Virginia in the 1970s. In 2013, they moved into a new headquarters building, still located in Abingdon, Virginia, and they donated their old building to the Barter Theater.
Food City is proud to be heavily involved in their communities. In 2017, they helped raise over $100,000 to benefit animal shelters in the region. Since 1992, they have teamed up with the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce and CSX to form the CSX Santa Train. This is a toy drive that helps distribute over 15 tons of gifts to children. Additionally, they also support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, ABLE, Race Against Hunger, and School Bucks.
Food City is also involved in sports. They have sponsored the Tim Irwin/Food City Bass Tournament since 1988 and have raised over $1,000,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Tennessee. They have sponsored several NASCAR events, race cars, and college football games.
